ASB/ Leadership Diegueno Middle School Sara Gillette, Room T-2 Email: [email protected]
Course Description : Welcome to Diegueno Middle School ASB! This is an exciting course because it allows a group of students (YOU!) to become representatives for all the students of Diegueno. The central goal of this course is to promote school pride and spirit. Other aspects of our ASB course include planning and promoting school events, school and community service as well as creating positive bonds among all students, staff and the surrounding community. You will be seen as leaders of the school and are held to high standards both after school hours as well as during school hours. ASB holds a lot of responsibility but it is unlike any other class offered because it is truly student-centered. In other words, you all run the show!
Grading Policy Students will be accessed in the following areas:
Active Participation (including Dances, lunchtime activities, committees, classroom tasks etc.)
Committee Work
Community Service and School Service hours (60 hours per year/ 30 per semester- 15 of those hours should be in-school)
Class Projects
Notebook Organization and upkeep
Attitude
Community Service: Each student will complete 30 hours of school and community service by the end of each semester (60 hours total for the year). Failure to complete this requirement will result in loss points and potentially a grade level. This is 150 points of your grade each semester. Again, AT LEAST 15 of the community service hours need to be on Diegueno campus.
Examples of Community Service: Lunch lines, setup/clean-up for dances and other events, student store, helping out with the PAST group during CAT, helping to set up for the year or volunteer for summertime events. You will not receive hours for working within your committees, as that is an expectation of the course. However, time you spend working outside with another team can be counted towards service hours with prior approval from Mrs. Gillette.
Grade Requirement: Students must maintain a C average or better to participate in ASB.
Homework : Homework will rarely be given for this course. Your main objective is to come to class ready to participate. If you are absent, however, you may be given tasks to make up outside of class. Attendance: It cannot be stressed enough that regular class attendance is essential for students. Students who accumulate an excessive number of absences may be referred to administration for SART process consideration, even for excused absences. Students are expected to arrive before the bell and remain in classroom until excused by teacher at end of class session. ASB Expectations:
Be present and on time; this means you are in your assigned seat before the second bell
No electronic devices permitted in class unless otherwise instructed by teacher (first offense- warning, second offense- kept for the period, third offense- given to administration to be picked up by parent)
Be courteous and respectful to all ASB members, staff, and fellow students (remember, you are all the representatives of Diegueno and your behavior is a reflection of our school!)
Be helpful! This course holds a lot of responsibility; when assigned to a task, make sure to complete it with 100% effort
Keep our ASB room clean and organized. Our room is a reflection of ASB
Act professional! This includes actions and words. Speak in a professional way, act in a professional way!
